Here's a precious little guy who can take you heart and wrap it around his little paw! You won't have
a chance once you look into those adorable, big, brown eyes. You can believe that adoption day is
going to be tough! But hey, what can you do? We knew it was a tough job when we took it.
Cleve was surrendered by his "family" who had owned him since they bought him from a breeder
when he was six weeks old. When their adult son, daughter-in-law, and grand baby moved back in
with mom and dad...Cleve had to move out. Owners said that the baby was "allergic" and that Cleve
was "too protective of the baby". They said that he loved the child and would give it kisses but would
growl if visitors tried to approach it but has never actually bitten anyone. They said that Cleve was
very protective of his family. Call us crazy....but isn't that a GOOD thing?? So instead of simply
crating Cleve or putting him in another room when visitors arrived, he was surrendered to rescue.
We truly do believe what his owners said about Cleve being protective of his family. It was obvious
that he loved them very much because he grieved and took the separation very hard. For nearly a
week, he slunk around in a deep depression, upset tummy, loosing weight, and hardly eating a thing.
We did all we could to comfort Cleve and assured him we'd find him a loving home that would not
abandon him. Slowly, he came out of his shell and began to play with other dogs and his foster family.
Cleve is now feeling better and looking for a new, loving, loyal family to call his own!
Cleve is a quiet, reserved guy in the house when around adults. He is house trained and has very
good indoor manners. However, Cleve does have a playful side and if you'd like to go out for a jog, a
brisk walk, or for a car ride then Cleve is up for it. Since his former owners state he is overly
protective of children, we will not adopt to a household with children under the age of 10. Older
children may be considered if they are respectful of animals and dog savvy. We have found that
Cleve loves running, playing, and gentle wrestling with his foster mom's 13 y/o nephew. Never any
incidents or problems and it seems a shame to deprive him of the company of younger humans which
he seems to enjoy so much. We can only evaluate Cleve based on our personal, subjective
evaluations. But as you can see from the photos in Cleve's photo album and video clips, he is quite
acrobatic and enjoys a good run and romp with older children. He knows several tricks such as sit,
lay, shake, and roll over. If you sit on the ground and hold your arm up, Cleve will take a running
jump and sail over it. He also likes to use you back as a springboard to get a good jump! (see his
photo album for an example of these acrobatics). Now don't get us wrong. Cleve isn't an unruly guy
at all and we enjoy and encourage this energetic play. If you are one of those people who will
complain that the "dog jumped up on my child, touched my baby, jumped over it and frightened it,
licked it and made it cry", etc. (believe me, we've heard it all) then you need to look elsewhere
because this boy loves to play and interact with his people! Cleve gets along well with his canine
foster brothers and sisters as well but we were informed by previous owners that he does not care for
cats. There are no cats at his foster home so we have not been able to evaluate this first hand but to
be on the safe side we don't think Cleve needs a home with cats....for the kitty's safety, that is!
Cleve does not climb or jump fences nor does he dig to get out. He really doesn't like to be outside
unless his people are with him. He'd just as soon do his' business' and come back inside with you if
now is not play time for you as well. He will stand at the door and bark and/or jump to be let back in.
He doesn't want to be alone outdoors. And while no Boston is an outside dog, small framed Cleve is
especially susceptible to cold and of course that flat nose and acclimation to an inside environment
means that Cleve simply cannot withstand excessive heat. Cleve looks a little thin to us and maybe it
wouldn't hurt him to gain another pound or two but otherwise, he's in good condition and was provided
with routine medical care and check-ups while with his previous owners.
The thing that delights Cleve more than anything is being around his family. It would be great if
Cleve had a stay-at-home parent or either a work-at-home parent. He is willing to consider a family
that works but would greatly appreciate someone who could come home and give him a mid-day
break. This kid will LANGUISH without human contact!! So if you are a busy, busy,
always-on-the-go kind of person....Cleve is not the guy for you! He needs someone who will bestow
love and attention on him and will appreciate his skillful lap warming talents!
Cleve did have some issues with regurgitating his food when he first came to us. He went to the vet
and had some Barium tests done and nothing serious was found...no obstructions, no tumors...all was
perfectly normal and Cleve was diagnosed with simple gastric reflux. He takes a Reglan pill in his
food or hidden in a weenie once a day and does just fine. Don't let this dissuade you from considering
Cleve. Many of us humans have gastric reflux and take a daily pill. It's not a serious,
life-threatening condition and giving one little pill a day isn't a big deal. Let's face it. If you are too
busy to give a dog a pill every morning or evening, then you're probably just too busy to own a dog.
If adorable little Cleve sounds like the kind of guy that would fit right into your household
and you think you are the one who can provide Cleve with a loving, loyal, committed home,
then please fill out an ADOPTION APPLICATION and mention his name. This adorable
little guy has a lot of love and joy to offer some lucky family so don't deprive yourself any
longer...fill out that app. and let's get the process rolling!
