Age: 9 years old
Weight: approx. 17 lbs.

Name: "Bryson"
Sex: Male
Age: 2 years
Weight: approx. 16 lbs.
Rescue:
Bryson was found as a spray and taken to a shelter in Alabama. He
was not claimed and after four days was released to Rescue
because he tested heartworm positive. We traveled to
Birmingham, AL and picked up Bryson and brought him back to
MS. He is now taking his oral pre-treatment medications and will
be ready to get his first injection in about two weeks. Bryson will
stay in MS until he recovers from treatment and then he already
has plans to travel to New England and will be placed in a foster
home up north until he finds his forever home. We know they'll be
very happy to have this Southern gentleman as their house guest!

Otis was surrendered by his owner to the Gulfport Humane
Society after he nipped a child who, by admission of the owner,
was abusing him and dragging him by the leg. Since he was an
older guy who took medication for seizures and had a history of
a bite, the Humane Society asked MBTR to take him in as he
seemed to be quite frightened in the shelter setting and was not
eating. We brought Otis home and he was a bit grumbly but has
not bitten anyone. He seemed very listless and at first we
thought he was depressed about being abandoned by his family.
He has been to the vet and had several blood tests done. Some of the lab work was sent out of office to
be processed and we should know the results in about a week. We will post updates when the lab work
returns. In the meantime, Otis has perked up quite a bit and is playful and follows close behind his foster
mom. He gets along great with the resident dogs and is perfectly house trained! Perhaps he was simply
grieving and is now getting over it. We still look forward to seeing his lab work.
***Pupdate 6-4-10: Bryson has continued to do very well. He's gained weight and isn't the thin,
bony little guy who first arrived. He has almost completed his oral pre-heartworm tx medication
and will be ready for the actual heartworm injection treatments soon. Bryson will receive the first
injection in a couple of weeks. We are hoping and praying for Bryson's full recovery. We'll post
updates as he progresses through his treatments.
Name: "Ace"
Sex: Male
Age: 3 years old
Weight: approx. 20 lbs.
Rescue:
Ace is a southern gentleman from Camden County
Georgia. He came to the shelter as a stray and no one
ever claimed this cute guy. He had an interested party in
adopting him but he unfortunately tested heartworm
positive. Ace found himself in need of a Rescue that could
take him and get him help with his heartworm treatments
but there didn't seem to be one in the area that had room.
That's when Pilots N Paws stepped in and provided Ace a
flight to Mississippi via his own private plane.
Ace has began his heartworm treatment regime. This will take several months and it will be a
while before Ace is ready for adoption but this is the safest route to take especially since Ace
does have a little cough from the heartworms. He's a big, flashy boy and we look forward to
seeing him regain his health again. Ace has not yet been neutered but we will do that after his
heartworm treatments are complete. This will ensure that Ace is heart healthy when he goes
under anesthesia to be neutered.
***Heartworm treatments, along with the associated costs of lab work during treatment costs roughly $300.00 per dog. If you would like to make a donation to help with Ace's expenses, you can mail it to our mailing address on the "Contact Page" or use the Paypal button on the Home Page. Adoption fees do not come close to covering vet bills. All general donations and donations to help specific dogs are GREATLY appreciated!!

***Pupdate 6-10-10: Otis' lab work came back totally normal. He continues to be a bit listless. The
medication he had been prescribed by a Banfield Vet (Petsmart Vet) does have the side effects of
drowsiness. Because we have received several dogs in the past that have been inappropriately
diagnosed and treated by Banfield vets, we made the decision to take Otis off his seizure medication
(Phenobarbitol). He seems to be doing just fine without it but remains a bit grouchy towards his foster dad
whom he does not see all day while he is at work. He is also a bit quirky around strangers and doesn't like
them approaching his foster mom. We will continue to monitor Otis and see how he does without the
seizure medication.
***Pupdate 6-19-10: Otis continues to do VERY well without his seizure medication and has shown
absolutely no signs/symprtoms of seizure activity at all. Without the side effects of the drugs central
nervous system depression, he has also perked up and has become quite and energetic and playful guy.
He is more tolerant of his foster dad but doesn't want to be picked up by him. This seems to elicit a
grouchy little snap. He does remain extremely close to his foster mom and allows her to love on him, pick
him up, hold him like a baby or whatever. He sticks to his foster mom like glue! We will continue to work
with Otis but it appears that Otis is a "one person doggie". He is really a doll baby to be around once you
have earned his trust. If after a few more weeks, he continues to show no signs of seizure activity, he
will be offered for adoption.
***Pupdate 6-18-10: Bryson received his first heartworm tx injection yesterday. He spent the
night at the vet's to make sure he had no reaction. He is now home and doing well. Bryson will
now have to take it easy for four weeks with extrmely limited activity until it is time for his 2nd
injection. He is doing just great and doesn't seem phased by the first injection at all. We'll post
new updates throughout Bryson's heartworm treatments.
Name: "Oliver"
Sex: Male
Age: 4 years old
Weight: approx. 17 lbs.
Rescue:
Oliver was pulled from a shelter in the Florida
panhandle after he was deemed unadoptable because
of an injury/infection. He was found as a stray and
taken to the shelter. They kept him a week before they
ever cleaned his dirty, feces encrusted hinny up and
discovered his problem and released to rescue. One
vet that examined Oliver said that his backside looked
as if someone had shot him with birdshot or someone
had inflicted some sort of injury to him. Our vet sedated
him and examined him more closely and found that he
actually had a perianal fistula and the multiple draining areas on his backside were all separate
tracts leading from a large, infected abscess. He said this was very hard to treat or repair via
surgery and recommended he be euthanized. We thought about this long and hard and decided
against this. Oliver was happy, playful, sweet, and appeared to feel just fine. In short, he didn't act
like the sick dog he was described to be. So we told the vet to come up with a plan "B". After
consulting with a surgical specialist, it was determined that since this condition was very similar
to Crohn's Disease, that we should treat it the same way. Oliver is taking a cocktail of drugs which
seem to be helping him. He took the meds for two weeks and returned for a checkup and was
instructed to continue the drugs for another two weeks. It's almost time to return for a vet
checkup and Oliver's behind looks much better, the multiple abscesses have healed and are no
longer draining. He continues to eat well, play, and act as if nothing is wrong with him at all! We
are glad that we went with plan "B" and are anxious to hear the vet's findings at Oliver's next
exam. We will post updates after he sees the vet again in about a week.

Name: "Walter"
Sex: Male
Age:
Weight: approx. 14 lbs.
Rescue:

Little Walter was adopted by his owner only 3 months earlier from
the Humane Society in Gulfport, MS. Her husband is in the military and
stationed in Japan. She was pregnant and having trouble caring for
Walter and his little Chi buddy, Piglet (see available list). Not wanting
them to go back to a facility that euthanized, she contacted MBTR to
find these two boys a new home. We initially wanted to find the boys a
home together but once they got around other dogs and made new
friends, they didn't seem to mind being apart. Piglet was offered a new
home with a retired lady who thought he'd be a perfect companion for
her and was small enough to travel with her. He was neutered, caught
up to date on vaccinations and quickly adopted. Walter is just as
adorable and just as adoptable. He just needs to gain a little weight
and he has some red, itchy skin and a minor eye infection that needs
to be cleared up first. He will be ready soon, is cute as a button and
will make a wonderful companion for some lucky person. He's just a
tad bit skittish but very quickly warms up to anyone who gives him a
little TLC. He's very sociable and gets along with all his foster brothers
and sisters.
This precious boy has already ended up in shelter/rescue facilities
twice in his young life through absolutely no fault of his own. This is a
little gem of a Boston and it's time for this cycle to stop! The next
home needs to be his FOREVER home and we're going to do our best
to make sure he gets a home where he'll be loved and adored. His
little buddy has found a great home and soon it will be Walter's turn.
Please watch for him to be posted when he's back in tip top shape.
